Odisha Named Most ‘Lightning Resilient’ State

Odisha has emerged as the most lightning-resilient state in the country despite topping the charts in terms of lightning strike count. The state received a whopping 9 lakh lightning strikes between April to July this year but still managed to keep the human casualty count to a mere 129. The control in human deaths is a result of the precautions taken by the Odisha Disaster Management Authority.

Out of the total lightning strikes of 64,55,540 in this period, Odisha faced the most amount with 9,00,296 occurrences. Additionally, Uttar Pradesh saw the most amount of deaths, a staggering 224 casualties, despite receiving one-third strikes as compared to Odisha. The Mid-Monsoon 2019 Lightning Report by Climate Resilient Observing Systems Promotion Council credited Odisha and Karnataka as the most resilient states in this aspect.

Interestingly, the report revealed that 2nd of June saw the most amount of lightning strikes with 2,19, 000 instances and the month of June recording the highest overall instances of this natural phenomenon.

The Indian Meteorological Department’s unique product innovation enables a 24 hours advance alert of lightning and thunderstorms, which has drastically helped in reducing fatalities. As a result, in many states across India, the number of casualties are on a decline despite an increase in lightning strikes.
