Senior National Volleyball Championships Kick-Starts Today In Bhubaneswar
Riding on the success of hosting several tournaments through the years, Bhubaneswar is all set to witness another sporting extravaganza from today. The Senior National Volleyball Championships will kick-start at Biju Patnaik Indoor Stadium in KIIT Deemed to be University.
Over 1200 volleyball players (both men and women) will be participating in the tournament from 28 states and 8 Union Territories. For the first time, players from Union Territory Ladakh will also participate in the championships, which will continue till March 11.
The selection of the Indian Volleyball team for the Asian Championships and other international tournaments will be conducted based on performance in the senior nationals. The selection committee of both the men’s and women’s teams will be present for the duration of the tournament.
The Senior Nationals will be conducted under COVID-19 protocols. The inaugural ceremony will be held on March 5, the occasion of Biju Patnaik’s birth anniversary. The ceremony will be held in the presence of Sports Minister Tusharkanti Behera, Sports Secretary Vishal Dev and other senior officials from the Volleyball Federation of India (VFI). It will be presided over by Prof. Achyuta Samanta, President, VFI.
The Championships are being held under the aegis of the parent body Volleyball Federation of India. In a first for volleyball, Odisha will be hosting two consecutive senior nationals as the previous edition was also held here. All the matches will be streamed live.
