Odisha FC Appoint Spanish Legend David Villa to Lead Global Football Operations
Indian Super League (ISL) club Odisha FC have announced the appointment of former Spanish footballer David Villa Sánchez to lead the club’s global football operations. Villa is considered to be one of the best forwards of his generation and one of the best Spanish strikers of all time.
“World Cup winner and Spanish football legend @Guaje7Villa has been brought in by Odisha FC to spearhead our global football operations”, Odisha FC tweeted. Along with Villa, former Odisha FC Head Coach, Josep Gombau, and Victor Onate are also a part of the club’s Technical Football Committee.
In his distinguished club career, Villa represented Sporting Gijon, Zaragoza, Valencia, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid in the domestic circuit. The tricky striker has three La Liga titles and three Copa Del Reys to his name. He also won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2011. Later, he moved to Major League Soccer (MLS) side New York City in 2015. After spending four seasons at the club, he went on to join Kobe earlier this year.
Villa had a very successful international career too, making 98 appearances for Spain, winning the Euro 2008 and FIFA World Cup 2010.
“I will try to bring my experience. Obviously, I didn’t play in India but I played soccer for 20 years as a professional and before that in the academy. And in all of the projects that we are involved in, I try to give all of my experience that I have in soccer”, said Villa on joining Odisha FC.
Odisha FC finished at the bottom of the points table during the ISL 2020-21 season, managing to secure only 12 points in 20 matches. The club will be looking to rebuild and make significant improvements ahead of the next season.
