Odisha Boy Wins Gold At Faza Para-Badminton Tournament
The second Fazza Para-Badminton International 2019 witnessed Odisha’s ace Para shuttler Pramod Bhagat win the crown in Men’s Singles category, making the state as well as our nation proud. The tournament was held in Dubai from April 2 to 7.
The final match was an intense encounter between Bhagat and England’s Daniel Bethell. Bhagat lagged during the first set which he conceded 15-21, but he came back strong in the next two sets, winning 21-18 & 21-13 and clinching the gold. With this win, he has qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. Overall, the Indian contingent won four gold, three silver and two bronze medals in the tournament.
Earlier, Bhagat had bagged a gold in the para-badminton men’s singles event at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Indonesia. Bhagat hails from Bargarh district and was diagnosed with Polio at the age of seven. Overcoming his challenges, Bhagat made it to the national level and first participated in national para badminton championship in 2006.
Some of his best achievements over the years include gold in the doubles event of the World Championship in Germany 2013, bronze medals in singles and doubles event of the 4th Turkish Para-Badminton Championship that was held in May 2018, and more.
