Dutee Chand Shines At 59th National Open Athletics Championships
Odisha’s ace sprinter Dutee Chand has shattered records at the 59th National Open Athletics Championships, bagging two gold medals. On Friday, she clocked a record 11.22 seconds at the 100m event, breaking her own record of 11.26. And on Sunday, she clinched the gold medal in the 200-metre sprint category, which she completed in 23.17 seconds.
She has been bettering her timing since 2018 and has gone from 11.30 seconds to 11.29 seconds to 11.26 seconds which she clocked this April in Doha. But with a new record to her name, Dutee is now officially the fastest woman 100m sprinter in the country.
These victories came right after Dutee’s disappointing run at the World Athletics Championships where she finished 37th overall and failed to secure a berth for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Dutee had clocked 11.48 seconds in her heat at that event.
Since then, Dutee has been inching closer to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics qualification mark of 11.15 seconds required for the 100m event – as the qualification period ends on June 2020.
Also worth mentioning is fellow Odia sprinter Amiya Kumar Mallick, who bagged the men’s 100m title with a season-best time of 10.46 seconds.
