VK Pandian Urges Collectors To Join Hands, Help The Needy
In the past few months, the world has been witnessing times like never before. A deadly virus that originated in Wuhan, China has caused widespread discomfort across all continents. Times like these call for people with authority and power to help those who are in desperate need.
In a rallying cry, VK Pandian, Private Secretary to Chief Minister and the man leading the revolutionary 5T initiative of the state government, has urged all the collectors of Odisha to go the extra mile and make ‘humane’ contributions that can benefit the society.
“There are very few institutions all over the world that are so empowered like the institution of collector in India. Use this power to help those in need and what could be a better time than this moment. Set high benchmarks in serving the people. All humane works are risk-free. Run the extra mile,”said Pandian.
Pandian cited the following clip from The Night Trial that took place in New York City in 1935 as an example of a generous gesture extended by the judge in the said case.
At a time when the world was struggling with The Great Depression, such acts of humanity are what kept people going, he said.
Pandian believes that kindness and generosity can take us through the coronavirus pandemic. To help a population of 1.3 billion will not be easy and it will take all those with authority, like the collectors, to come together and fully commit towards the cause of helping the needy.
Who are Collectors?
A district collector or a district magistrate is an IAS officer who is chief in charge of the general administration of a district. The post was created in 1772 under British rule where the main functions of the collector were to supervise general administration, collect land revenue and maintain law and order in the district.
