Odisha: Patnaik Announces Relief Package for Cyclone Affected Farmers
To help farmers recover from the damage caused by Cyclone Yaas, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced several welfare schemes and financial packages. Cyclone Yaas pounded Odisha last month, with gallons of seawater entering villages during landfall and sweeping away huts, roads, trees and farmlands.
The following schemes and relief packages have been announced by the state government:
- The state announced an agriculture input subsidy for the small and marginal farmers who have sustained crop losses. The farmers will also get 150000 quintals of quality certified seed on top of the existing subsidy.
- Assistance has been announced for the loss of animals and the construction or renovation of damaged cattle sheds. This includes (a) Rs 30,000 per milch cow and buffalo, b) Rs 25,000 per draught animal (up to 3 animals), (c) Rs 16,000 per calf (up to 6 animals), (d) Rs 3,000 per goat/ sheep (up to 30 animals) and (e) Rs 2,100 per damaged cattle shed
- Subsidies have been assigned for Cyclone Yaas affected farmers, including Rs 20 Cr for farm mechanisation, need-based subsidy for pest control, subsidy for agriculture equipment and assistance for soil nutrition management in saline inundated areas of Bhadrak and Baleswar. This includes (a) 2,000 pump sets to be provided with 50% subsidy with a maximum of Rs 15,000, (b) 3,000 sprayers to be provided with a maximum subsidy of Rs 23,800, (c) Betel vine incentive: Rs 15,000 per farmer (125 farmers), (d) 10,000 affected farmers to get quality planting material and (e) 10,000 free vegetable mini kits @ Rs150/kit
- To restore the livelihood of fishermen affected by Cyclone Yaas, the state announced assistance for those who suffered loss/damage to fishing boats & nets. The CM also announced assistance for de-silting, restoration of fish farms and input subsidy for damaged fish seed farms. The financial aid includes (a) Rs 34,100 for the repair of partially damaged boats, (b) Rs 2100 for the repair of partially damaged nets, (c) Rs 9,600 for replacement of fully damaged boat and (d) Rs 2,600 for replacement of fully damaged nets.
