Odisha Imposes Two Week Lockdown Amidst Covid Surge
Intending to contain and control the increasing count of Covid positive patients in the state, the Odisha government has issued orders for a two week lockdown. The lockdown will come into effect across the state from 5th May till 5 am on 19th May. However, the order clarified that the lockdown would be ‘complete’ during weekends, starting 6.00 pm on Fridays till 5 am on Mondays.
The government intends to restrict the movement of persons primarily, and not goods, as per the order. As a result, the movement of goods and goods carriers shall remain unaffected by the lockdown. Furthermore, subject to availability, vaccination drives shall continue in places designated by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. The lockdown also exempts people who desire to get tested for Covid-19 to travel to their respective Government/Private Covid testing centres by themselves.
Healthcare facilities, banking services, public utilities such as the oil and gas sector, postal services, et cetera will not come under the ambit of the lockdown, the order notes.
Odisha recorded 8,015 new Covid-19 cases, 5,634 recoveries and 14 deaths in the last 24 hours, the state health department said on Sunday. With this, the total number of confirmed cases has gone up to 4,62,622 of which 3,91,048 have recovered and 2,068 have died due to the infection. The active cases stand at 69,453.
