Justice Bimal Prasad Das Appointed As OHRC Chairperson
Justice Bimal Prasad Das, a former Judge of Orissa High Court has now taken charge as Chairperson of Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC), as per the state government’s appointment made on August 22.
Das stated that his focus in this new role will be on environmental issues and pollution-related health hazards, custodial deaths, abuse of power, and special emphasis on protection of rights of children. “I will conduct surprise visits across the state and inspect shelter homes meant for children and schools. It is the duty of the Commission to ensure that the funds meant for children’s welfare are properly utilised,” said Das.
OHRC, which now has three members including the Chairperson, has around 10,000 cases pending. Das said that priority is being given to resolve them at the earliest.
The post of OHRC Chairperson has remained vacant since 2012 and Justice Raghubir Dash, a member, has been performing his duties as the Commission’s acting Chairman since May 2019. Das has been appointed after the Orissa High Court had set a strict deadline of September 23 for the State Government to fill up the post.
