Rahul Gandhi Visits Jeypore On International Women’s Day

Ahead of the poll season, Congress President Rahul Gandhi paid a visit to Jeypore in the Koraput district of Odisha, where he interacted with women from across the state in a town-hall session. This visit was planned to coincide with the occasion of International Women’s Day, which is celebrated on March 8th every year.

Gandhi highlighted that if voted to power in Odisha, he would make the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill, which would ensure greater representation of women in legislative institutions, a priority. The Congress Party has adopted the theme of women empowerment as a poll plank and is working to facilitate the passage of the bill on a national level as well.

Additionally, he made a promise to provide free of cost education to women in Odisha. “Be it the technical education, school or college education or any kind of higher education, the state government will provide free education to girls if the Congress forms the government in Odisha,” Gandhi said.

He revealed that the party, led by Shri Niranjan Patnaik in the State, intends to provide financial assistance for marriage of poor girls, and would hike the widow allowance to ₹2,000. A corporation would also be set up to support women entrepreneurs who run small scale business units. The Nehru-Gandhi scion also talked about the possibility for farm loan waivers, apart from increasing the minimum support prices for paddy, if voted to power.
