Baleswar hosts Cyclothon 2019

A bicycle rally titled ‘Cyclothon 2019’ organised by the Lions Club of Baleswar youth wing was held in Baleswar on Sunday. The event was conducted to encourage the public to use bicycles as a means of transport in a bid to protect the environment and to promote healthy living.

The event witnessed participation from more than 200 cycling enthusiasts who competed in different categories namely junior, sub-junior, senior and women. The cyclists covered approximately 10 km starting from Mission compound field and covering the entire town via FM Golai, Station square, ADM square etc.

The cyclothon was inaugurated by Superintendent of Police B Jugal Kishore, who congratulated the organizers for taking up a social cause of utmost importance and conducting a fun event around it.

“Wider use of bicycle as against vehicles run on fossil fuels could contain the menace of pollution to a large extent. Even for a small distance, including going to a local daily market, we use bike and four-wheeler. They not only pollute the atmosphere but also trigger traffic congestion. Over and above, use of cycle lessens financial burden on monthly budget and keeps one fit,”

said a woman participant.

“With the rally, we are trying to create awareness, especially among the young masses, to embrace cycle for a greater cause”,

she added.
