Odia Documentary ‘The Mountain Hockey’ Marks a First on Disney+ Hotstar

‘The Mountain Hockey’, an Odia language documentary based on the history of hockey in Odisha, launched on Disney+ Hotstar on Friday. This marks the first-ever entry of an Odia language documentary on an OTT platform.

Produced by Raj Kishore Hota and Manish Bhushan Mishra, the documentary is about a mentor who trains more than 400 tribal girls of Odisha on a mountain. The idea of such a documentary first came up after the conduct of the highly successful 2018 Hockey World Cup in Bhubaneswar.

Odisha has rapidly evolved as the country’s sports capital, with significant investments coming in from both the government and private players with regards to the development of quality sporting facilities. The pervasive nature of sports has not allowed economic disparity to come in the way of talent and appropriate recognition. Dutee Chand is one such example, who fought against all odds to achieve global commendation and fame.

Recently, another film was made on the rugby players of Odisha, titled ‘Jungle Cry’. The film, which portrayed the true story of twelve underprivileged children from Odisha making it big in the rugby arena, won the ‘Best Film’ (Jury) award at the 11th Dadasaheb Phalke Film Festival, 2021. All of these players belonged to the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), a visionary institution started by Dr Achyuta Samanta, to provide opportunities to the deprived.
