Debi Prasad Dash Appointed Chairman Of Enforcement Committee Of WCO

Odisha-born bureaucrat Debi Prasad Das has been elected to head the Enforcement Committee of the World Customs Organisation (WCO), in the capacity of the Chairman. An Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer from the 1985 cadre, Dash is the first Indian Customs officer to serve in the prestigious position of the Chairman. Earlier, he was the vice-chair of the Enforcement Committee for a period of two years.

Currently lodged as the Principal Director General for Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Dash has garnered a stupendous track record. Apart from serving in several domestic institutions, he also has plenty of international experience due to his tenures in the United Nations Security Council and the Commonwealth Secretariat.

An alumnus of Utkal University, Dash is also the recipient of the President’s award for specially distinguished service record, apart from a merit award from the World Customs Organisation. In what could be called as a feather to his jewel-studded crown, he was the head of the International Panel of Experts at the UNSC overseeing arms embargo, financial sanctions and travel ban in Africa; and was also a member of the INTERPOL Working Group on Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism.

The World Customs Organisation is an umbrella body for 182 customs organisations from all over the world, which collectively processes 98% of the world’s trade.
