Odisha To Set Up Second COVID-19 Testing Centre
In Odisha, Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC) at Bhubaneswar is the only testing centre for COVID-19. So far, there have been only two positive cases in the state. However, chief spokesperson Subroto Bagchi has warned that over 100 individuals have been identified with COVID-19 symptoms and hence the matter has to be taken seriously.
In a bid to prepare against a potential outbreak, the Odisha government has quickly moved to establish a second diagnosis centre at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Sambalpur. VIMSAR will specifically have a Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) laboratory.
Jayashree Dora, Superintendent VIMSAR, stated that the institution’s experts had already sent the feasibility report asked by the state government for setting up the laboratory. The report has proposed the establishment of a testing laboratory in the Microbiology department of VIMSAR, as soon as feasible. The examination of the Recombinant Technology Polymerase Chain Reaction (rt PCR) test would be possible at the facility once it becomes operative.
Residents of western Odisha will benefit largely from the laboratory at VIMSAR. Currently, VIMSAR, like every other institution, is transferring throat swab samples of COVID-19 suspects to the Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC) for tests.
Authorities of VIMSAR have already initiated the COVID-19 outpatient department (OPD) at the hospital where 80 to 100 patients are being checked daily. The OPD screenings are conducted as per the WHO guidelines.
