Odisha now has as many Active COVID Cases as Delhi
With a recent surge in COVID infections, Odisha has almost as many active cases as Delhi. As per the latest data from the Health Ministry, Odisha currently has 10,463 active cases while Delhi has 10,743. In fact, only 11 states have more active cases than Odisha as of July 31.
State-wise distribution of Active COVID Cases
It’s no surprise that Maharashtra tops the list with 1,48,454 active cases. Meanwhile, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh round off the top three with 69,708 and 69,252 active cases respectively.
Odisha fares much better in terms of controlling the death rate. A total of 169 people in the state have lost their lives due to Covid-19. Whereas the states of Maharashtra, Delhi and Tamil Nadu alone account for 37% of the total deaths in India.
Notably, Odisha has registered 1499 new COVID positive cases in the last 24 hours. This takes the total tally in the state to 31,877. Out of these, 19,745 have recovered.
While the authorities remain positive due to a high recovery rate, spurts of new infections in districts such as Nabarangpur, Bhadrak, Dhenkanal among others have raised concerns. It will be interesting to see if the state government extends the ongoing lockdown in select districts beyond July 31.
