Bhubaneswar to begin Human Clinical Trial of Covid-19 Vaccine

Bhubaneswar is set to begin a human clinical trial of the local COVID-19 vaccine from tomorrow. The first two phases of the trials will begin at an ICMR certified institute in the capital city, a senior official confirmed.

“The human trials of BBV152 COVID Vaccine or Covaxin will begin on Wednesday in a special laboratory set up at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM (IMS & SUM) Hospital, in accordance with the protocols laid down by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI),” said the official.

“All necessary arrangements have been made for conducting the human trials. We expect to start from Wednesday,” Dr E Venkat Rao, the principal investigator of the trial process told PTI.

Praising the new ‘dedicated human trial unit’ in Odisha, Rao said it can conduct crucial clinical research in the future. Meanwhile, he also added that many volunteers have come forward to participate in the trial.

“Several research organisations from across the country and outside have been eagerly waiting for such a unit in this part of the country to generate evidence in clinical research,” Rao added.

He also urged more people to participate in the trial by registering on the dedicated website.

“People willing to volunteer for the vaccine trial can contact the institute. All details are displayed on its website,” the professor said.
