Undying Love for Weaves: Meet the Celebrities Who Love Odisha Handloom
Known to master the ‘saree look,’ actor Vidya Balan has created a furore on social media after she posted a picture wearing a black Sambalpuri handloom saree. She wore the exclusive ‘mathematical equation’ saree on the eve of the release of her movie ‘Shakuntala Devi,’ based on the real-life story of a mathematical genius. The saree was prepared by the Odisha weavers and took almost one month to be woven into perfection.
But, Vidya Balan is not the first celebrity to be smitten by the sheer handiwork of the weaves of Odisha. Several celebrities over the years have put their faith in Odisha handloom and have expressed their love for the weaves. In fact, Vidya had also previously donned an Orange Ikkat saree for promoting her movie ‘Tumhari Sulu.’
We bring you a list of such celebrities who have flaunted Odisha handloom on national and international platforms.
Who better to start with than Sona Mohapatra? Odisha-born singer Sona has been vocal about her love for the state’s handloom and has promoted it at several platforms. She has a special inclination for the Kotpad weaves – a vegetable-dried fabric woven by the weavers of Koraput district. Sona wore a Kotpad gown for her concert in Bhubaneswar and a Kotpad vegetable-dyed saree for an award function.
Author, actor and film producer, Tisca Chopra is known for unique movie choices. The stylish diva is also the face of several brand endorsements and is known to be point-on in her fashion game. On her visit to Bhubaneswar for a fund-raising event for acid attack survivors, Tisca opted for a purple-green Sambalpuri weave.
The handloom has caught the attention of not just female actors but also sports celebrities. At a ramp walk held in Bhubaneswar for a social cause, former hockey captain Dilip Tirkey turned eyes as he shunned his formal look and walked in a handloom dhoti-kurta.

She was seen wearing a blue Sambalpuri weave during the Union Budget discussion in Rajya Sabha in 2019.
Former Prime Minister of India late Indira Gandhi was known to be a connoisseur of Odisha handloom sarees, which was later replicated by her daughter-in-law and granddaughter.
