Bhubaneswar Warms Up To New Beer Brands Including Bira 91
With the addition of a number of swanky pubs and restobars in the last few years, Odisha’s capital city Bhubaneswar is slowly developing a taste for casual drinking. Light beers are the perfect companion for a quick catchup with friends, and hence, their popularity has shot up in the city. Odisha is also one of the few states in the country that has allowed food aggregators such as Swiggy and Zomato to provide home delivery of liquor. That, coupled with a scorching summer and a delayed monsoon, has paved the way for many large beer makers to enter the lucrative beer market in the state.
Let’s take a look at the new beer brands that are now available in Bhubaneswar.
One of India’s most loved craft beer brands Bira 91, is the newest entrant in Bhubaneswar. Currently, three variants – Bira White, Bira Blonde and Bira Strong are available for sale across all liquor stores in the city. They are available at attractive price points, ranging in the Rs 120 to Rs 140 band for a 500 ml can. The Bira White is a cloudy wheat beer with low bitterness and high aromas of citrus and coriander. The Bira Blonde is a clear lager made from Barley and Saaz hops. Meanwhile, the Bira Strong is a high-intensity wheat beer with a higher alcohol content of 7%.
From the stable of global giants Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), Hoegaarden is one of the pioneers of bottled wheat beer. Founded in 1445, the Belgian beer brand is synonymous with wheat beer all over the world. The beer made its first entry into Odisha in the summer of 2019 but disappeared from the shelves after a few months. However, pint bottles of Hoegaarden have now made a comeback and are priced at an MRP of Rs 150 at the stores.
Mexico’s favourite Corona Extra is yet another brand owned by AB InBev that gained popularity in the city upon its entry in the summer of 2019. The pale lager is one of the top-selling beers in the world, especially in the United States, which imports the beer from its neighbours in large quantities. The Corona Extra is a light beer that’s popularly consumed along with a slice of lime or lemon as it adds a refreshing flavour. The 355 ml pint bottle costs Rs 150 and is available across liquor stores in Bhubaneswar.
Originated in the northern German city of Bremen, Beck’s Ice is brewed with 100% pure malt for ultimate refreshment. The company takes pride in its super smooth brew made with natural ingredients. Since its launch in India a few years back, the brand is slowly expanding its offering across various states. Beck’s Ice was introduced in Bhubaneswar in 2020 and is now competing with the popular Indian brand Kingfisher. A 500ml can of Beck’s Ice costs Rs 130 at liquor stores.
