Rourkela Among Top 50 Finalists in Global Mayors Challenge
Odisha’s Steel City, Rourkela has made it to the list of Top 50 Champion Cities by Bloomberg Philanthropies, a US-based Foundation that works in the areas of arts, education, environment, government innovation, and public health. The result is based on the performance in the 2021 Global Mayors Challenge. The only other Indian city that made it to the list is Pune. Notably, 15 out of the Top 50 cities will be granted USD 1 million to implement the breakthrough solutions.
Rourkela has been shortlisted among 631 cities as a champion city for implementing innovative and promising ideas in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The citizen-centric urban initiatives and solutions involving the local leaders and health professionals to keep the virus at bay by Rourkela Municipal Corporation has been mentioned and appreciated in the Annual Report 2020 by Bloomberg Philanthropies.
Rourkela proposed providing women entrepreneurs access to solar-powered cold-storage units and new electric vehicles to reduce food wastage and prolong the shelf life of perishable items. Rourkela’s idea is compelling because it brings a gender equality aspect. As a large number of vendors are female, the programme will be managed entirely by women federations across the city.
Such a solution was offered to the problem that more than 700 registered street traders selling fruit and vegetables were affected by the lack of proper storage facilities, and 30 per cent of their products were sold for low value or went to waste.
