Odisha Launches Water Sports at Hirakud Dam
In a bid to boost tourist traffic, the Odisha government has launched water sports on the right dyke of Hirakud Dam near Jhankarani temple in Burla.
Commerce and Transport Minister Padmanabha Behera and Chairperson of Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) Shreemayee Mishra inaugurated the first water sports facility in the region.
Speaking on the occasion, Mishra said that the State government is on a continued mission to promote tourism. To encourage adventure tourism, a subsidy is being granted to firms interested in setting up facilities at tourist points across the State.
Akela Adventure Private Limited, a Bhubaneswar-based firm, has been assigned the task of running and managing water sports activities at the reservoir. Water sports like jet skis, speed boats, water scooters, bumper boats, banana boats, kayaking and paddleboat will be open for tourists at the reservoir between 8 am and 6 pm with charges ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 1,500.
“The State government has been laying emphasis on the development of tourism and attracting tourists to Odisha. The OTDC is also making efforts to encourage the entrepreneurs dealing in tourism,” said Mishra.
“We are delighted that water sports have been launched at Hirakud Dam. The State government has provided a subsidy to the firm for the facility,” she added.
Hemanta Pradhan, the Assistant Director of Tourism, announced that water sports would be an added attraction for tourists visiting the dam. The attraction of Hirakud Dam draws thousands of tourists from across the region and from adjoining states.
“The firm will also ensure the security of the tourists and provide them safety gear,” Pradhan said.
