Odia Singer Sona Mohapatra Features in Times Square Billboard
Odisha-born Bollywood singer, music composer and lyricist Sona Mohapatra has featured at the Times Square billboard in New York City. Music streaming platform Spotify displayed a billboard featuring Mohapatra as a face of the ‘EQUAL’ campaign.
Mohapatra took to Twitter to express her delight. “Happy to toot my own horn by saying that yes, I’m possibly rare if not first independent artist to be here on my own hustle with some incredible allies. This happened! To be on a Times Square, #NYC billboard is a pop-culture milestone for an artist. To be the face of a message for a more EQUAL world is an honour. For an indep. artist, almost impossible. Thank you for the belief, Spotify India,” she tweeted.
Notably, Mohapatra had debuted with her the album ‘Sona’, which contained hit singles like Bolo Na, Aaja Ve and Abhi Nahi Aana. She is recognised for her Sufi classics like Tere Ishq Nachaya and a collaboration with the Aussie band INXS on their famous song Afterglow.
Mohapatra came to mainstream prominence with the groundbreaking talk show Satyamev Jayate with Aamir Khan, in which she frequently appeared as a lead singer and performer. She was also the executive producer of the musical project on the same show.
Born in Cuttack, Mohapatra is an engineering graduate from CET Bhubaneswar and holds an MBA degree from Symbiosis Pune. She worked as the brand manager in FMCG giant Marico before pursuing a career in singing.
Mohapatra’s rendition of Odia folk song Rangabati on MTV Coke Studio won many hearts across the world and now has over 63 million views on Youtube.
