Martial Arts Training To Be Introduced For College Girls
The Odisha government’s higher education department will soon engage reputed and experienced martial arts training institutes, or sports organizations, to provide self-defense training to college going girls in the state. The ambitious plan has been devised in the wake of a heightened trend of violence against women in the state and beyond.
The department will invite expression of interest from concerned firms. These firms will have to submit their bids by January 10 and must have prior experience in teaching self-defense courses to a large group of learners with a proper syllabus.
Higher Education minister Arun Kumar Sahoo said that the initiative to teach martial arts will help the girl students to ward off threats in the society. “It aims to make them confident and enables them to defend themselves against any physical assault. It is a form of women empowerment. Collectors have been asked to strengthen the programmes in the colleges and universities in their districts”, added Sahoo.
The self-defense training for college students is a flagship programme of the higher education department under the State Youth Policy, 2013. Earlier, the government had also started self-defense training for girls in schools.
