Eminent Writers Receive Sahitya Akademi Award
Two writers from Odisha, Tarun Kanti Mishra, and Kali Charan Hembram have been selected for Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award for the year 2019. Mishra, a noted Odia story writer and former Chief Secretary of Odisha, will receive the prestigious award for his book ‘Bhaswati’. Meanwhile, Kali Charan Hembram has been selected for his short Santali storybook ‘Sisirjali’.
Sahitya Akademi announced its annual Sahitya Akademi Awards in 23 languages today. Seven books of poetry, four novels, six of short stories, three of essays and one each of non-fiction, autobiography and biography have won the award. Jury members representing 23 Indian languages recommended these two nominations. The nominations were approved by the Executive Board of the Sahitya Akademi under the Chairmanship of Dr. Chandrashekhar Kambar, President, Sahitya Akademi.
“I am grateful to the Akademi for recognition of my works. Any institutional recognition makes you work harder and do better. But far more than the award, for a writer love and affection of readers, are things to treasure for life. I bow before my readers who love my stories and encourage me to write,” said the ex bureaucrat-turned-writer.
Santali writer Hembram upon receiving his award said, “I am really happy for the award because it is recognition for my continuous literary pursuit. The award will certainly motivate me to write more and more.”
In a special function, to be held on 25 February 2020 at New Delhi, the selected authors will be presented with their awards which comprise of a casket containing an engraved copper-plaque, a shawl and an amount of Rs. 1 Lakh.
