Bhubaneswar Bags Top Ranks in Ease of Living Index Report 2020
Odisha state capital Bhubaneswar has been ranked fourth in the list of ten most liveable capital cities across India, in the Ease of Living Index (EoLI) Report 2020. The report, launched by the New Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), places Bengaluru at the top of the rankings, followed by Chennai and Shimla. The EoLI 2020 was released for cities with more than a million population, and those with less than a million population. In 2020, 111 cities participated in the assessment.
While Bhubaneswar scored 59.85 points in the Ease of Living Index, Bengaluru, Chennai and Shimla got 66.7, 62.61 and 60.90, respectively. Mumbai fetched 58.23 points, while Delhi had to settle with 57.56. Four parameters – quality of life, economic ability, sustainability and perception of citizens – were used to determine the score on the Ease of Living Index. While Bhubaneswar did extremely well and topped the charts on the citizen perception front, it did not do well in the ability parameter.
Bhubaneswar has also been accorded the second position in the category of cities with a population of less than a million. Shimla topped this category, with a total score of 60.90. Bhubaneswar had a score of 59.85, followed by Silvassa (58.43).
The Ease of Living Index (EoLI) is an assessment tool that evaluates the quality of life and the impact of various initiatives for urban development. It provides a comprehensive understanding of participating cities across India based on the quality of life, economic-ability of a city, and its sustainability and resilience. The assessment also incorporates the residents’ view on the services provided by city administration through a Citizen Perception Survey.
