Odisha Police to Recruit People of Transgender Community
In a landmark initiative, the Odisha Police sought recruitment of people from the transgender community, seeking their applications for the constable and sub-inspector posts. The Odisha Police Recruitment Board opened the application portal for online forms from men, women and transgender personnel to appoint 477 sub-inspectors and 244 constables.
“I invite qualified women and men to join the Odisha Police as constables (communication) and SIs to serve the people of the state. Also, for the first time, people belonging to the transgender category can apply for both the posts,” said Director General of Police Abhay. The DGP informed the recruitment to the sub-inspector post will be conducted by the main police cadre, while the constable post is subject to a technical cadre. The minimum qualification for the sub-inspector job is graduation, and that of the constable post is plus 2 with a diploma in computer application.
However, the notification mentioned that differently-abled people will not be eligible to apply.
A senior police official mentioned the importance of physical efficiency stating, “When women first started joining the police force as officers or inspectors, there were many challenges involving the setting of the parameters for them. Efficiency was a concern, but they came out with flying colours. The eligible ones among the transgender people will be selected and I am sure they will do very well. Gradually, they will be able to hone their skills”.
Gopal Nanda, retired DGP, praised the initiative saying, “If they fulfil the requirements of the qualification and physical standards, they can join the force like any other person of any other gender. That’s wonderful”.
Meghna Sahoo, secretary of All Odisha Transgender Association, also hailed the government initiative. “We have in the past provided our services to the society at large in different capacities. Now it is our turn to serve the police department. After the government’s notification, as many as 45 transgender people have approached me evincing their interest in applying for the constable as well SI job. I think there will be fewer candidates for the post of SI,” she said.
