ISO Certification For Tribal Hostels In Odisha
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has provided its certification to 44 tribal hostels in Keonjhar and Sambalpur districts – making Odisha the first state to get ISO certification for tribal hostels. In this case, the certification was granted based on the quality of amenities available for scheduled category students living in hostels set up by ST and SC Development, Minorities and Backward Classes Welfare Department.
Around 156 hostels located in Keonjhar and 90 in Sambalpur were taken up for assessment. The two divisions involved in the inspection were the district team and the audit team. The district team followed the terms of ‘quality’ certification and delivered reports within 90 days. The audit team had visited and inspected 32 hostels in Keonjhar and 12 in Sambalpur before the lockdown in March to conclude their assessment.
Post the assessments of these divisions, 44 hostels qualified based on the set parameters and were awarded ISO certification accorded to number- 9001:2015. The other 28 hostels will be inspected post-lockdown.
Smt Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar, the Director of the department, stated, “All other hostels would be equipped with basic amenities, equipment, and infrastructure in the coming months”. In Phase-II, the ST-SC Development department is taking up evaluation and assessment of hostels in 10 more districts.
The ISO is an international standard-setting body composed of representatives from various national standards organizations.
