Aditya Birla To Launch 75 MW Solar Plants In Odisha
Aditya Birla Renewables Ltd, a part of the diversified Aditya Birla business cluster, is expected to complete the project of setting up solar plants of 75 MW capacity by June 2020, it was made known today. The group intends to set up three units, each of 25 MW capacity and wishes to develop more plants to contribute an additional 100 MW if granted additional land for the purpose.
Odisha, in its inaugural solar auctions that were held in July last year, invited bids for 200 MW plants. The tenders were oversubscribed four times, with Aditya Birla emerging as the L1 bidder. The differential between the L1 and other competitors, however, unsettled Gridco authorities. Three players were tied at the L2 level with the price quotation of ₹3.19/unit – Sukhbir Agro Energy Ltd, Gupta Power Infrastructure Ltd., and Eden Renewable Varenne Pvt. Ltd, bagging 25, 20 and 50 MW respectively. Acme Solar finished as the L3 bidder, quoting a per-unit price of ₹3.20. Despite an appeal from Gridco, L2 and L3 bidders did not lower their bid price to the L1 level. Hence, Gridco decided to cancel the tenders for the remaining 125 MW.
Although Odisha has around 333 MW of installed solar power capacity, it sources around 79 MW from outside the state. Private sector interest in Odisha’s solar park idea was negligible until now, in stark contrast to central PSUs who had come with a deluge of proposals. Aditya Birla’s pioneering venture will only lead the way for many more projects to come up in the solar power sector.
